Let’s get right into it, shall we? Hot take on this week’s episode ‘The Spoils of War‘ – It was the best episode of Game of Thrones so far, and Cersei doesn’t stand a chance in hell in this war any longer. Let’s recap a bit to catch up. Lady Olenna dropped the mic last week when she told Jamie it was she who poisoned Geoffrey. Logic would dictate that Jamie would relay this message to Cersei forthwith as she believes Tyrion killed him. Jamie never believed this, which is why he set him free a few seasons ago. The belief that Jamie and Tyrion would somehow team up against Cersei after this revelation quickly became a pipe dream after the conclusion of this week’s episode.
Spoils of War was a shorter episode and only lasted about 52 minutes. It was the most complete episode to date as it encompassed the full story surrounding battles and the emotions that go into them. Jon Snow showed Daenerys the dragon glass in the cave and surprised her with drawings on the wall. They showed the First Men teamed up with the prior citizens of Dragonstone. They were fighting the white walkers together, which were drawn on the cave wall. This convinced Daenerys that Jon was telling the truth, and she agreed to help him….if he bent the knee. The scene quickly changed, but it’s obvious that Jon chose against this. In my opinion, I think that Daenerys will end up helping Jon although he does not bend the knee to her. I’ll explain why in a bit.
Both Tyrion and Jon showed how valuable they are to the show in this week’s episode. The Unsullied Army is temporarily trapped at Casterly Rock after Euron destroyed most of their ships. Jamie’s army emptied the food coffers before they left for High Garden, and the Unsullied are now trapped with no food. This will make them vulnerable and easy to defeat when Jamie returns, right? Yeah, keep thinking that. Daenerys is REALLY pissed off. Might not be the smartest thing to get on the bad side of a chick with three dragons. Just sayin’. Even though it is a temporary set back, she desires immediate victory and yells at Tyrion, blaming his plan for her failure. The only issue is that his plan is the most logical one. This is war, and there are going to be casualties and minor defeats. The overall victor, however, is determined by how they adjust to those defeats. What happened next really changed the tide of the episode as well as the tone of the series moving forward.
Daenerys wants to swoop in with all three dragons and just lay waste to the city. One move. Easy-peezy. Victory. While this would definitely ensure her victory, sound advice from both Jon and Tyrion snap her back to reality. A light bulb goes off in Daenerys’ head – “Why fly my dragons to destroy a city and kill thousands of innocent civilians, when I can simply fly them to where my enemy’s army is? ” This, my friends, is when things really started. They flash over to the temporary victory (keyword: temporary) of Jamie’s army. While the soldier’s regroup, a sound is heard coming over the mountainside directly toward them. Jamie gives the order to form a line screaming “SPEARS AND SHIELDS, SPEARS AND SHIELDS!”
The sound gets louder and louder until the Dothraki come charging in thousands deep on horseback. These guys can fight man, let me tell you. They come charging in full speed on horseback, only to jump up to a standing position and start popping off headshots with arrows. Not a single one falls off. It was crazy. Bron tells Jamie to flee, but of course he doesn’t listen. Foreshadowing. Then it happens, you hear the screech and think to yourself “Oh man, here it comes!” Then BOOM! Drogon comes swooping in with Daenerys on his back. She says it – “Drakaris!”. Ohhhhh man do those soldiers get lit up! The entire battlefield gets set ablaze and soldiers are literally melting before Jamie’s eyes. He orders Bron to get to the ballista and try to shoot Drogon down. The first episode misses narrowly. The second shot not only hits, but it shows you have literally zero chance against a dragon. Drogon takes the shot directly into his neck and starts to have trouble flying. He lands directly in front of the ballista and you can guess what happens next. That’s right. It’s now firewood. Drogon appears to be more pissed off that he got hit opposed to being injured, and Daenerys jumps off to try and remove the spear.
While this is going on, Tyrion is watching from the hilltop. He sees Jamie staring at Daenerys. “Flee you idiot” he says. Does Jamie flee? Come on, you know damn well he doesn’t. He takes off on his horse, grabs a spear and charges straight at Daenerys. “You idiot. You fu***ng idiot” says Tyrion. Jamie gets closer. Daenerys is still trying to pull out the spear. Jamie is even closer now. Daenerys turns around. She has nowhere to go. Then Boom!, Drogon looks right at Jamie and spits a wall of fire directly at him. Just as it’s about to hit Jamie, he gets saved by Bron and knocked off his horse. Unfortunately, this is the end for Jamie ladies and gentleman. We see him in full battle armor floating down into the water. Nobody is there to save him. Floating down. Nobody can save him. Fade to black. Jamie Lannister is gone.
Holy Sh*t right! I know, I thought the same thing. Daenerys cut out the middle man. Why kill innocent civilians in the city to get to my enemy’s army when I can just kill them all in the field? I have absolutely zero clue where all this is going to go now. We have only three episodes left this season. Jamie Lannister is dead. What the hell is Cersei going to do? I recognize this is Game of Thrones and that people find their way of “coming back to life” Jon Snow was a bit different of a situation. Right after he got stabbed, they foreshadowed his return with Melisandre showing up. No magic is going to recover Jamie from the bottom of the water. This isn’t even one of those situations where next week’s episode will start with someone jumping in to save him at the last second. It’s literally 10 feet away from Daenerys and Drogon. Anyone who tries to go in there will get roasted before they can say boo. He’s in full armor with one hand made of solid gold. He should be cemented to the bottom of the water bed. All this being said, I still think they are going to pull some nonsense and save him.
The Unsullied will be rescued and Euron’s naval fleet is probably next to become firewood at the hands of our three flying friends. Here’s what we know so far.
- Jamie is dead but not really
- Daenerys believes in the white walkers
- Jorah is cured and enroute to find Daenerys
- Jamie is dead but he’ll come back
- Jon Snow has all the dragon glass he’ll ever need to fight the white walkers
- Tyrion was right once again
- Jamie is “dead”
These last three episodes of season 7 are going to be absolutely insane. I don’t expect to see the battle with the white walkers this season. After all, we need the huge battle for the last six episodes next year. We’ll get a taste of it to hold us over, but the full on war will come next year obviously. Here’s my prediction. At some point before the end of this season, Jon will realize he is really Jaehaerys Targaryen. This will cause Daenerys to aid him against the white walkers without making him bend the knee. It is family after all. They will take King’s Landing with Jamie as prisoner, and Jon will somehow convince everyone they need to fight the white walkers. Since it’s Game of Thrones, they will probably make him show up with a dead body of some white walker.
After all, joining everyone’s armies is the only way to win. Cersei will agree, but then pull one of her typical Cersei moves and back off. This will make Jamie fully understand that what Lady Olenna told him was 100% accurate – Cersei is pure evil. To be honest, I have no clue what will happen to Cersei, but I so hope all three dragons light her a** up at the same time. I’ll bring the marshmallows. I also would bet that at least one of these dragons get turned into a white walker. That red fire is going to turn into blue flame and melt the wall. Mark my words. I know, I know that it’s insane. It’s Game of Thrones though, so this means it has to happen.
Seriously though, Jamie should be dead as hell but I know they are going to bring him back. Ugh.
