It looks like Netflix’s The Punisher isn’t going to tie into The Defenders that much at all. It will serve as a more grounded, back-to-center approach on Marvel’s TV universe.
Punisher actor Jon Bernthal spoke to Entertainment Weekly recently, and commented on how they basing Frank Castle’s story:
“We are stripping down every supernatural element. This show is different. It looks different, Frank is a character rooted in the most basic human emotion. He’s a comic-book character, but he doesn’t fly, he doesn’t have X-ray vision. He’s an unbelievably skilled soldier who’s been very, very angry and very, very hurt.”
The only similar character we will see is Karen Paige, our friendly reporter/law office secretary. Karen is going to be the one helping Frank figure out who set up his family’s murder. We recently learned all of The Punisher’s episode titles, and there are 13 of them.
Although nothing has been revealed officially in a statement, The Punisher trailer at the end of The Defenders showed that Billy Russo, AKA Jigsaw, will serve as one of the show’s main villains. Jigsaw is Frank’s main nemesis in the comics, so it would make sense to have him in the Netflix series.
The Punisher is set to release before the end of 2017, and most likely in October.
