The Agents of S.H.I.EL.D. panel at NYCC took place at Madison Square Garden tonight. A number of juicy details were revealed and shown live as the first 20 minutes of season five were debuted for attendees. Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb also revealed that season five will air beginning on Friday, December 1st, 2017.
Season four ended on an incredibly intriguing note with the team being whisked away into space by aliens. Coulson woke up and gazed out the window into space before walking out of the room. This led many to believe that S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department) would be making their debut in the Marvel TV universe. Unfortunately, Clark Gregg squashed our hopes for this as he indicated they do not own the rights to S.W.O.R.D. He’s right, as those belong to Fox.
Gregg did confirm that the Kree would be returning to the show. We pretty much saw this coming as actors dressed in Kree clothes and painted in blue were seen walking all over the set. Toward the end of the panel, Jeph Loeb showed the first 20 minutes of season five, and it reveals that not everyone on the team made the trip to space.
We saw Coulson already. It seems that not all of the aliens are interested in the S.H.I.E.L.D. team for good reasons. One alien reveals that they are from the future when he notes that the S.H.I.E.L.D. team is legends in history. Agent May tries to get away from one, but is caught due to be impaired from a leg injury. He grabs her in a WWE type chokehold and tells her that he’s been looking for her. I assumed this is for nefarious reasons, but maybe the aliens are simply handsy – Yeah, I don’t believe it either.
Mack shows up and starts knocking out aliens just as Mack does. Then Daisy comes through with perfect timing and quake kills an alien. This means that Agent Fitz was left behind at the diner because he “wasn’t on the list”. The 20 minutes went by like wildfire, and we’re incredibly hyped for season five. It’s a shame we have to wait until Inhumans is over with how badly that turned out, but of course nobody expected it.
The series will debut with a two hour premiere. It will be the first two episodes of the season and continue into 2018. There was no clarification either way, but we expect there to be a Christmas break. I really hope this doesn’t happen as season five will just be hitting its stride, but I’d expect even a short couple week break through Christmas and New Year’s.
I hope that this will not be the final season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but reports are out that Disney tried to pressure ABC to cancel after season four. This was incredibly surprising considering how well season four was received critically as well as with fans. The show cycled through three plotlines with Ghost Rider, life model decoys and H.Y.D.R.A. All of them blended seamlessly together, which is something that “normal” shows have a hard time doing let alone superhero based shows.
Personally, I think Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is the best written show on TV. I really hope it sticks around for a lot longer, but these reports don’t bode well for its future. Hopefully, Disney takes a look at the fans present at NYCC as well as their ratings, and decides to keep S.H.I.E.L.D. around for the longhaul. Unfortunately, we won’t find out until next year. The good news is we only have less than two months until it premieres on ABC on Friday, December 1st, 2017.
